I’ve spoken about how important it is to complete projects and release them in the past, but let me cover a few key points that you can keep in mind as to why you absolutely should finish that game! (yes you)
1. Habit
Getting into the habit of anything is really important if you want to achieve things. Finishing a game means you are now someone that finishes games… and that may seem just a trivial piece of wording but it’s laying the foundations in your brain to become a habit for when you start a project you finish a project. Do this enough times and the idea of not finishing a project will feel weird, which is perfect for your new super habit of completion!
2. Portfolio
Building a portfolio of completed projects seems like an obvious play to “attract a publisher” and that is 100% true and could be enough to convince you to finish.
However.. there are other benefits.
First up is attracting help or hiring for your own studio (even if it’s just me, myself and I) if you decide one day that you would really love to bring in an artist to work on the game and be a more long term team member then you are going to have to attract them with your game idea, but they will also want to see that you are a studio that actually releases games and their work will be seen.
3. Accomplishment
Do not underestimate the feeling of accomplishment. Completing the open loop of an unfinished game will give you a huge buzz and mental clarity. There is no huge paragraph for this section just a simple let yourself feel good about the work you’ve done.
