Are you making a game that WILL sell or TO sell?
That sounds hardly any different, but those 2 words are vital to your planning and mindset with your game
Let’s get the silly bit out of the way and say it’s ok to want to make money from your game, in fact you SHOULD make money from your game.
That being said, not all selling is created equal…
You 100% should be doing market research before you write any code to see which game genres perform best and which games die a death instantly on release.
If you start your game plan with the phrase “ok, so which games sell the most?” then you are going to have a very tedious long and unsatisfying experience.
However, if you just stop and think about the game you want to make and find ways to make it SO good and filled with features players will expect and want, then you get to create the game you wanted plus making the decision for players to give you their money a whole lot easier.
You are making games for humans not spreadsheets and you are one of those humans.
